Evaluation of the Effects of Conjunctivochalasis Excision on Tear Stability and Contrast Sensitivity

چکیده
Conjunctivochalasis (CCh) disrupts tear flow and damages tear film stability. This study sought to evaluate the tear stability and contrast sensitivity of patients with CCh on whom CCh excision was performed. The study included 39 eyes from 39 patients; all patients had eyes with grade 2 or 3 CCh, underwent CCh excision, and were evaluated before and three months after the surgery. The evaluated variables included the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining, corneal surface irregularity, Schirmer's I test, the tear meniscus area (TMA), and contrast sensitivity. A follow-up of three months was achieved in 36 eyes for 36 patients. All parameters improved significantly after surgery (p < 0.05), except Schirmer's I test, thus suggesting that CCh excision is an effective method for reconstructing the lower tear meniscus and improving both tear film stability and corneal surface irregularity. The results further demonstrated a simultaneous increase in contrast sensitivity after surgery.

Simultaneous treatment of pterygium complicated with conjunctivochalasis: analysis of pterygium excision and conjunctival autotransplantation combined with sclera fixation
BACKGROUND This prospective study investigated the safety and efficacy of a therapeutic method of treating pterygium complicated with conjunctivochalasis, using pterygium excision and conjunctival autotransplantation combined with sclera fixation, followed by therapeutic contact lens application. METHODS Fifty-seven patients (83 eyes) diagnosed as pterygium complicated with conjunctivochalasi...
متن کاملA Review on the Managements of Conjunctivochalasis
Conjunctivochalasis is a bilateral conjunctival disease diagnosed by loose and redundant conjunctival folds, commonly in the inferior bulbar area. It is a common reason for ocular irritation, particularly in subjects older than 60 years of age. There is no treatment for asymptomatic patients. However, symptomatic patients could be treated by a variety of medical and surgical therapies, which wi...

UNLABELLED Dry eye complaints are ranked as the most frequent symptoms of patients visiting ophthalmologists. Conjunctivochalasis is a common dry eye disorder, which can cause an unstable tear film and ocular discomfort. The severe conjunctivochalasis characterized by high LId-Parallel COnjunctival Folds (LIPCOF) degree usually requires surgical intervention, where a conservative therapy would ...
متن کاملChange in Tear Film Lipid Layer Thickness, Corneal Thickness, Volume and Topography after Superficial Cauterization for Conjunctivochalasis
We evaluated the change in tear film lipid layer thickness, corneal thickness, volume and topography after superficial cauterization of symptomatic conjunctivochalasis. Bilateral superficial conjunctival cauterization was performed in 36 eyes of 18 patients with symptomatic conjunctivochalasis. The mean age of patients (12 males, 6 females) was 68.6 ± 10.9 years (range: 44-83 years). Preoperati...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Yellow vs. Blue Color Contrast Sensitivity pre and Post LASIK
Introduction: contrast sensitivity is one of the most important psychophysical tests that may be used for the evaluation of refractive state of eye and retinal image quality. Yellow vs. blue color contrast sensitivity may be more suitable in this regard. Materials and Methods: thirty myopic eyes were considered in this study. Yellow vs. blue color contrast sensitivity was evaluated under the sa...
